For fans of poetry, spoken word and honest storytelling, Freespill: A Night of Unfiltered Desi Soul Flow comes to Live Theatre on Wednesday 15th July as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the GemArts Masala Festival.
Bringing together some of the UK’s most exciting South Asian voices, this special spoken-word event explores identity, heritage, community and the experiences that shape who we are. Hosted by Newcastle-based performer Tahmina Ali, the evening will showcase work that is personal, powerful and unapologetically honest.
Audiences can look forward to performances from award-winning poet Jaspreet Kaur, author of Brown Girl Like Me and The Spaces in Between. Joining her is Australian Poetry Slam Champion Zohab Zee Khan, whose dynamic performances blend poetry, storytelling and social commentary. Also appearing is poet, human rights activist and mother Chandni Chopra, whose work explores culture, belonging and resilience.
Tahmina Ali will perform her own commissioned monologue, a deeply personal piece examining love, sacrifice and the quiet strength found in everyday lives. The evening will also feature an open-mic session, providing emerging writers and performers with the opportunity to share their work and connect with new audiences.
More than simply a poetry event, Freespill is a celebration of stories, culture and connection. It offers a platform for voices that challenge perceptions, inspire conversation and bring communities together through the power of words.
