Despite slow reception upon release, Cube (1997) has amassed quite the cult following for its harrowing and surreal atmosphere, the likes no other film has since managed to replicate.
A blend of sci-fi and horror swirled together and packaged into a psychological thriller, Cube presents the viewer with overwhelming discomfort as they watch a rag-tag team escape from a sadistic machination of intelligent design: a 26^3 Cube filled with horrifying and gruesome traps.
Many fans view Cube to be the precursor to all trap-based horror films in the 21st Century and it’s easy to see many parallels in other franchises, the Saw franchise being the most prominent.
While it does struggle with its plot direction – something that will become obvious to any viewer – it’s the intelligent design and gripping (or intangible) surrealness that maintains interest until the very end.
