Experience the deeply moving true story of the Stolen Generations through the life of one man, caught between two families, continents, and cultures. ‘The Other Side of Me’ is an achingly intimate dance duet that raises vital ethical questions around identity, adoption, the criminal justice system, and psychological wellbeing.
The production is the result of a cross-cultural collaboration between Gary Lang, Artistic Director of the Northern Territory Dance Company (NTDC) and a Larrakia man, and Northumbria University. It is produced and toured by BlakDance, an organisation dedicated to supporting First Nations contemporary dance.
Lang is an internationally recognised industry leader and ambassador for First Nations cultures. His work blends contemporary, classical, and traditional Aboriginal dance, forming a distinctive style he describes as Aboriginal Ballet. The show has recently been nominated for two Green Room Awards, including Outstanding Duo and the Breaking Ground Award.
This powerful and restorative performance uses dance to tell the real-life story of a young Aboriginal man, born in the Northern Territory in the 1960s, who was adopted by a white English family and raised in the English countryside. The two performers embody his dual identities – the English upbringing and the Indigenous heritage from which he was separated. Together, they explore themes of loss, disconnection, and resilience, confronting the lasting impact of the Stolen Generations on First Nations communities.
Following the performance, there will be a 15-minute post-show discussion, offering audiences the opportunity to reflect further on the work and its themes.
Tickets, priced from £12.00 in advance, are available at northernstage.co.uk.
