Northern Stage in Newcastle hosts Snow White: The Sacrifice on Thursday 31st October until Saturday 2nd November courtesy of forward-thinking, concept-minded North East company balletLORENT, with a dance theatre adaptation that delves into the darkest corners of the psychology behind the classic story.
Pulling no punches in terms of the barbarism and bitterness which can be read into the original source material and its themes, the production takes as a jumping-off point “a woman’s dread of aging, and her battle against invisibility through enacting monstrous fantasies” in forming a more brutal companion piece to its concurrently running family-friendly Snow White show, also at Northern Stage.
The Sacrifice is helmed by an all-star array of performers, musicians and costume and stage designers, led by no less than scenario writer Carol Ann Duffy, former Poet Laureate and winner of the Whitbread Prize, Forward Prize and T.S Eliot Prize among many others for her poetic works, and the perfect choice in vivifying the ambitions and approaches of the balletLORENT’s ethos within this timeless tale.
