With most of the band from the North East, including across Tyne & Wear and Teesside (with guitarist Ellie being the exception, coming from London), Labyrinthine Oceans have had their fair share of local gigs – but their upcoming show at The Globe in Newcastle on Thursday 17th October is certainly one not to miss.
The four-piece formed back in late 2021. Vocalist Julia and bassist Toby started working together on some material that was originally started as a solo project by Julia and then by 2022, a full band had formed. Following a line-up change in 2023, where drummer Patrick and lead guitarist Ellie were welcomed, the band have been focusing on releasing music over the past couple of months.
Despite all four members having a vast range of interests and inspirations, the music they collaboratively make together is nothing short of sonically pleasing, following the indie shoegaze scene and other similar subgenres.
Inspiration from Slowdive, Deftones, Nirvana and Radiohead merge together to create a unique and fresh sound, despite the feelings of nostalgia being so prominent for songs you may have only heard for the first time.
Tracks such as ‘Black Silk’ remind me of earlier Wolf Alice, with a unique and live perspective. Their most recent release, ‘Home’, has an audible distinctive sound, setting it apart from any of their other singles and proving that the band are getting better with every release they put out, providing encouragement to the audience of their promising future and future releases.
Labyrinthine Oceans have released a collection of singles and one EP. And with their next single being released on Wednesday 9th October, there’s plenty of time to learn it before you can hear it live at The Globe the following week.
Julia has confirmed that the band are: “Looking forward to getting back on stage for sure” and that after their couple of months break, they have: “Really missed playing”, so they are super happy to be back.
The band have a remarkable stage presence, putting nothing short of an adrenaline-fuelled performance on display.
Labyrinthine Oceans are a true reflection of fresh talent, completely changing the local alternative and indie rock scene. If you haven’t divulged into their discography yet, I strongly encourage you to while they are still a rising band, so you can follow them on their journey.
