With a sound not unlike the work of In Flames and vocals that almost gave me a sense of Taylor Swift, it’s fair to say that Labyrinthine Oceans have caught me off guard. Their latest single, ‘Home’, is due out on Wednesday 5th June, and I’m attempting to give you an idea of what I think about it, but there’s such a musical labyrinth to my ears that there’s scarcely a way to compose my thoughts within the track’s four minutes.
From the moment the first notes trickle in, listeners are enveloped in a lush sonic tapestry. The instrumentation is rich and dynamic, with each layer meticulously crafted to create a sense of depth and texture. The production quality is truly outstanding, a testament to the band’s attention to detail and commitment to their craft. Every element, from the shimmering guitars to the pulsating rhythms, is rendered with pristine clarity, allowing each nuance to shine through.
At the heart of ‘Home’ lies its emotive core. The lyrics, delivered with sincerity and conviction, explore themes of longing and belonging, resonating with anyone who has ever felt adrift in the vast expanse of the world. This track gives me shades of ‘All Too Well’ whilst also taking me on a tour of ‘90s rock, with hints of a specific In Flames favourite entitled ‘Liberation’. The Wearside outfit (either Newcastle or Sunderland depending upon whom you ask) have learned a lot on the road and matured with style; indeed, this release speaks volumes, considering their debut album is barely two years old.
Moreover, Labyrinthine Oceans’ penchant for polished production is evident throughout ‘Home’. Every aspect of the song, from its arrangement to its mixing, is executed with precision and finesse. The result is a sonic experience that feels immersive and cinematic, transporting listeners to a world of their own making.
Each track I hear from this artist stands on its own two feet, independently reaching out, an image implanted upon my mind. Therefore, it’s safe to say that ‘Home’ will follow suit and will be its own unique jigsaw of discovery in the compendium. It’s heartfelt, and Labyrinthine Oceans are bearing their all with this material – inviting you to join them or spurn them, though I wouldn’t really encourage the latter.
On their website, the band invite you to “stalk their music tastes.” And when you see Radiohead, Muse, Black Sabbath and even Bill Withers on the playlist, it’s no surprise the result simply doesn’t wish to confirm to simple boundaries or genres. It’s music and it’s for listening.
As if their musical prowess wasn’t enough, Labyrinthine Oceans are also set to embark on an extensive tour, bringing their electrifying live performances to audiences across the country. For fans of atmospheric rock with a touch of introspection, these shows are not to be missed. With their dynamic stage presence and undeniable charisma, the band is sure to leave a lasting impression wherever they go.
