The latest release from vaguely alternative Labyrinthine Oceans, ‘Visions from Below’, is a melting pot of music that seeks to form its own weird and totally unique identity.
With tracks ranging from the solidly hard rock ‘Sinking Sands’ to the ‘80s synth-pop of ‘Sky Circuit’, there’s something for pretty much everyone on this album – and permeating all twelve tracks is an impressive array of songwriting ability and lyricism.
The album, overall, has a melancholic though not quite dreary feel to it, somewhat reminiscent of Radiohead, often using lo-fi tones with muffled vocals and deeply compressed guitars.
This, however, is fully broken with the synth-focused centre of the album, as well as the closing track, which tend to be more upbeat in tone, and the Van Halen-esque shredding guitar solos. In my personal opinion, however, these aforementioned aspects sometimes feel somewhat inappropriate and don’t add much to the songs.
Overall, it’s well worth a listen.
