North East pop provocateur Loren Heat is stepping into 2026 with serious momentum. With international shows under their belt, a BBC Introducing ‘One to Watch’ nod, and their biggest hometown headline to date on the horizon, Loren is carving out a bold space for queer pop in a region where the genre is still finding its footing.
Their latest single, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, takes one of literature’s most famous love stories and flips it on its head, reimagining William Shakespeare’s tragic romance with a sapphic twist. For Loren, the idea isn’t about rewriting history so much as amplifying what might already be there. “I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily reclaiming it,” they explain. “There’s always been a little queer hint in some of Shakespeare’s work. Some people interpret Mercutio as being in love with Romeo. I just think it’s fun to make it sapphic.”
The track began life on Loren’s first-ever trip to London, where they worked on an early demo with producer Ben Lythe. The version fans hear now, however, was shaped back home in the North East when longtime collaborator Chad Rodgers added his own creative touch. Loren added: “I enjoy a second opinion. Having two brilliant people work on it helped craft it into the catchy little tune it is today.”
That collaboration sits alongside Loren’s clear artistic mission. As a proudly queer pop artist from the North East, visibility is central to what they do. The region’s pop scene is still relatively small, and Loren is keen to see it grow: “There is next to none when it comes to pop artists in the North East,” they say. “But I’m so proud of who I am and how I identify and love. I want people to feel seen and heard – no matter your mental state, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”
The past year has seen Loren’s world expand quickly, with international shows including Japan and an upcoming slot at South by Southwest in Texas. Still, one of the most exciting moments ahead is much closer to home: their biggest headline show yet at Middlesbrough Town Hall.
With unapologetic queer joy at its core and a growing global audience, Loren Heat’s pop rebellion is only just getting started.
