Returning for a second year after a successful first event in 2023, Tees Folk takes place at Stockton Globe on Saturday 7th September. And this year’s event is a celebration of the sounds and talents of contemporary folk music and features an all-Scottish line-up.
Headlining are award-winning trio Lau who merge an acoustic folk tradition with post-rock electronics. Band member Kris Dever played a solo set at last year’s Tees Folk and returns this year with a full band in tow, which The Guardian have described as “A remarkable band – the most musically adventurous trio in British folk exquisite and hypnotic, musicianship at its best.”
Celebrated singer-songwriter Siobhan Miller makes her Tees Folk debut accompanied by her six-piece backing band. Siobhan brings a unique vocal style that balances a love of traditional songs with modern influences, and which will be a hit with the Teesside audience. Siobhan has been described by fRoots as “One of the best Scottish traditional singers on the plane” and by The Herald as “A writing talent that’s as impressive as her velvet voice”.
Glasgow-based quartet Gnoss wowed the crowd at last year’s after party and they return in 2024 to play the main stage with their livewire instrumental sets. Their sound weaves together acoustic layers, outstanding musicianship, deep traditional roots and contemporary flair to create songs and tunes brimming with confidence. According to Folk Radio UK, “Gnoss are one of those rare birds in folk: a group you can name after hearing their first notes.”
Completing the line-up is Hannah Rarity who won the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2018. Earning comparisons to the likes of Eva Cassidy and Cara Dillon, but with a confident sound of her own, she mixes together traditional, contemporary and self-penned material. Irish Music Magazine says of Hannah: “Not only has she a wonderful voice, she has gravitas. When she sings, we are compelled to listen.”
Tees Folk aims to bring the very best of world-class folk and acoustic music to Teesside, and this year’s line-up features a range of acts that will please ardent fans of the genre and those who are new to the scene alike.
The organisers are hoping that this year’s event will match the success of the inaugural festival and that Tees Folk will become another part of the regular calendar of vibrant live music and festivals in the Tees Valley.
