North Yorkshire outfit Brain Radio return with new music. This time, however, what was once a duo has evolved into a solo project, with Jim Becket taking the helm for a fourth album entitled ‘Gamma Frequency’.
Opening with ‘Without a Trace’, I’m drawn in by the dreamy, layered guitars accompanied by beautifully arranged vocal harmonies. The sound feels expansive – more like a full band than a solo effort – highlighting Becket’s impressive command of production and arrangement. This attention to detail continues throughout the record. ‘Start Again Then’ shifts the pace, building into a looping crescendo that encourages a sense of renewal, before easing into a signature acoustic wind-down.
In terms of genre, the album moves comfortably between the intimacy of folk-rock and the sweeping scale of stadium-ready alternative rock, offering plenty of variety. It’s worth paying close attention to the lyrics; each track is packed with lines that can catch you off guard and, at times, provoke deeper reflection. There’s a clear sense that this is a deeply personal record, written with honesty and intent.
‘Gamma Frequency’ is available now on all major streaming platforms.
