Independent promoters Shoe Cake Comedy Club return to Stockton-on-Tees on Friday 15th May with a stacked lineup. Comedy aficionados will spot that its name pays homage to the absurd and surreal Masterchef spoof from The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, which, as a child, I found quite eerie. In fact, I still shudder when I see Grossman’s face plastered on his jars of pasta sauce in the supermarket. But I digress.
Run by comedy promoter, actor and DJ Phil Smith, the long-running Shoe Cake Comedy Club stages events across the North East and Yorkshire, performing in an eclectic mix of venues – from theatres, pubs and clubs to restaurants, bars, art centres, festivals, and even a castle.
The club showcases the talents of carefully selected professional comedians alongside up-and-coming jokers. In addition to comedy shows, Shoe Cake runs stand-up and improv workshops for anyone who thinks they’re funny – and occasionally proves it.
This month, raucous improv sketch group Discount Comedy Checkout comes to town for a night of spontaneous, audience-directed ad-lib madness. It’s your chance to call the shots and play god – just as you’ve always wanted! The show features Leeds-based impressionist Chris Lumb, Eddie French, Natalie Smeaton, and Phil Smith himself, aka Boro superfan Ted Hanky.
If that all sounds like your kind of playful, silly smorgasbord, head to Stockton’s Georgian Theatre for a slice of Shoe Cake. Truly “dish-licious!”
Tickets, priced at £12.00 in advance, are available at georgiantheatre.co.uk.
