Four-piece rock outfit, Hivemind, are back in Newcastle for a headline show following a lively performance at This Is Tomorrow. Laura Freyaldenhoven caught up with them to find out more about the band, the local music scene and their upcoming o2 Academy Show.
What’s coming up in the world of Hivemind?
We have a new song coming out over the next couple of weeks called ‘Scared’. It’s been played a little bit on some BBC channels so that’s pretty cool. We’re currently shooting a video for it and then dropping it as a release – so keep your eyes peeled.
You recently played This Is Tomorrow festival in Newcastle which is something to be proud about. What was that like for you?
It was amazing. It was the best show that we’ve played to date – and the biggest show Georgia has played to date. It was nice to be noticed by the BBC enough to get put on the BBC Introducing stage too. We absolutely loved it!
How do you feel about the music scene up North? Would you say it has changed over the past few years?
We’ve been in the band for nine years but we’ve been going to gigs for probably 15. It’s changed a lot, I would say. There’s always something different happening every few years. There’s quite a good underground hip-hop group of artists now. But generally, it’s very supportive. We’re all in it together and there’s a little North East band community.
Your latest single ‘Knees & Toes’ speaks about anxiety…is that a topic you would like to explore more in future songs?
I don’t see why not but obviously there’s just so much that anxiety covers and it’s different for everyone. But it’s a growing topic and a growing issue at the minute. All of my friends and family are suffering from it. That’s what this new song, ‘Scared’ is about. It’s about getting over your fears.
What can people expect from your o2 Academy show?
Blood, sweat and tears. We’ve got about four new songs that people may not have heard yet. We’re excited! There’s going to be a lot of energy. We took a lot of learns from previous shows and we’re just really focused on putting the energy out on stage and playing fast-paced, energetic songs where people can connect.
What’s next for you? Are there any EPs or albums on the horizon?
We’re just going to keep putting out songs for now. The short-term plan at the minute is to promote ourselves as much as we can and get as much music out there as we possibly can. We’ve had some really good responses from the likes of ‘Knees and Toes’ and ‘We’re Just Friends’, both getting a decent amount of airplay. We just want to keep putting out songs that we consider good and hopefully, everyone else considers them good too. Album-wise, we’ll look at that more next year, once we have a set of songs that people like.
Hivemind play Newcastle’s o2 Academy 2 on Friday 30TH August. Tickets priced at £6.75 in advance, are available from ticketmaster.co.uk.
