North East outfit Whale Hill are preparing to release their new single so Lee Allcock caught up with the band to find out more.
For those of our readers who haven’t come across Whale Hill, can you tell them about the band including your sound, upcoming gigs and releases, and your influences…
We are Whale Hill, we’ve just completed our first year together performing and our aim is to always put on a show for whoever chooses to come and see us play. We have a new single out for release, ‘Vertigo’, which will be available on all platforms on Friday 14th June. When it comes to our sound, I’d definitely say we’re a mixture of post-pop/punk and indie. In terms of our actual influences, we’re varied in that all 3 of us have hugely different music tastes from one another; we tend to try and stick to writing music that feels natural to us and we enjoy playing.
You’re about to release your new single, ‘Vertigo’, so what can we expect from it sonically and lyrically?
I think sonically, it’s one of our more fun and upbeat songs. However, lyrically it’s a huge contrast: the song is very much about past struggles with anxiety and panic attacks in public spaces and not knowing either what’s actually happening or how to deal with it. The song for me means a lot as it’s an outlet of multiple thoughts I’ve had during one of these situations in the past and hopefully, the subject matter will resonate with anyone else who has been in a similar situation that listens to it.
We hear that you have a summer tour lined up too…
We have spent our first year as a band trying to get as much experience under our belt and we now feel its time to test the waters outside of Teesside and show brand new audiences what we have to offer.
If you could play any venue in the world, where would that be and why? And what would be on your rider?
In terms of an actual venue, it would have to be the 02 Academy in Newcastle. I’ve seen some of my all-time favourite acts in there such as Jamie T & Wolf Alice and to take the same stage as them would be a dream come true. The overall dream would be a spot on a Leeds Festival line-up as that’s always been a massive part of my life for as long as I can remember and was my first real exposure to live music. In terms of a dream rider, we’re unapologetically massive fans of Carling so it would just have to be a few crates of Carling to keep us happy.
