Marika Hackman’s dark melodic folk-influenced music has received both critical acclaim and a strong and loyal following since her emergence back in 2013.
A multi-talented performer, Marika is a skilled singer, guitarist, pianist, drummer and bass player and one of her first musical adventures as a teenager was drumming in cover band The Clementines, the group fronted by supermodel and actress, Cara Delevigne.
Her rise to prominence was also boosted by Charlie Andrew, the producer of Alt-J’s ‘An Awesome Wave’, the Mercury Music Prize 2012 winning album. Charlie acted as producer on her first mini-album ‘That Iron Taste’ and championed her early endeavours.
Having released three albums in a relatively short period, ‘We Slept At Last’ (2015), ‘I’m Not Your Man’ (2017) and last year’s ‘Any Human Friend’, Marika has gained a reputation for dark and truthful lyrics, crystal clear vocals and interesting use of melody.
Her music would never be described as pop, however, there is a real talent to her compositions, creating memorable songs without the obvious overuse of repetition and simplification. As well as her solo efforts, Marika Hackman has also provided guest vocals on many other artists’ material including Alt-J, The Japanese House and Sundara Karma.
Her most recent releases explore the very personal world of sex, and her masturbation-themed single ‘Hand Solo’ has become a cult hit which has been enthusiastically received by audiences on her most recent live dates.
In part due to some of the subject matter but also because of her honesty and stage persona, Marika’s gigs have become riots of liberation, freedom and personal expression. Just as she sets out her life with frankness on stage, so it is reflected back from the audience as gig-goers revel in the honesty and connect with the struggles of 21st-century relationships.
Having gained a considerable reputation for packed gigs that are charged with energy and are regularly sold out, Marika Hackman carries on her live schedule from last year with a string of performances in the UK this spring.
