New Jersey’s prodigy child Nicole Atkins is on a quest. She has long tried to chase her golden voice along a life nurtured with madness and sorrow, and her date at The Cluny 2 in Newcastle this month will be another waypoint in her unique pursuit.
“Too weird to live, too rare to die” is a quote by the incredible Hunter S. Thompson, the late father of Gonzo. This is a quote that sums up Nicole and her music perfectly – and it’s a quote that was reinforced when I stumbled upon the official video for her track ‘Brokedown Luck’ in which a very famous segment from a certain cult film was recreated; it has a magnificent melody too – kudos to you, Nicole.
