Formed in Oldham in the early 1980s, Inspiral Carpets came to prominence in the latter part of that decade as part of the ‘Madchester’ scene alongside The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and The Charlatans. The Inspirals’ blend of Hammond organ and fuzzy guitars was reminiscent of 1960s psychedelic and garage-rock, given a ‘baggy’ dance makeover. They became as famous (or perhaps infamous) for their t-shirt designs as for the music.
Their 1990 single ‘This is How it Feels’ reached 14 in the charts, and the accompanying debut album ‘Life’ went to number 2 in the album charts. While sophomore album ‘The Beast Inside’ and the singles taken from that were less successful, they did score top 20 hits with ‘Saturn 5’ and ‘I Want You’ taken from their third album, ‘Devil Hopping.’ The band split up in 1995 after being dropped by their label, Mute.
The Inspirals reformed in 2003 within the classic line-up featuring Tom Hingley on vocals; however, he departed in disputed circumstances in 2011 and was replaced by original singer, Stephen Holt. In November 2016, drummer Craig Gill died at the age of just 44 and this had an enormous impact on both the band’s members and fans. The band went into indefinite hiatus following this tragic event, until a run of 19 dates supporting Happy Mondays earlier this year.
Their announcement of a run of new shows includes playing the Parade Ground at Sunderland’s Fire Station on Friday 9th August as part of the venue’s Summer Parties series of events.
The band intend for these new shows to be ‘a celebration of the music we created, which has brought so much joy to people over the last 35 years…Craig’s death had a profound effect on many people. The outpouring of love from around the world at the time gave some comfort to his family and friends as we all tried to come to terms with what had happened.’ They are keen to give the fans another chance to sing along to their favourite hits and commemorate the life of Craig.
About the show in Sunderland, singer Holt said: “We have never played in Sunderland before, so we are massively looking forward to the show. See you down the front.” Keyboardist and one of the principal songwriters, Clint Boom, added: “We gigged all last year and after a successful run with our friends Happy Mondays, we’re back on the road. It will be fantastic to play for the people of Sunderland. We can’t wait.”
