‘The Chase’, Darlington-based band Floral Detectives’ new “mini-album”, is an eclectic and exciting piece of music that kept me more than engaged throughout its runtime.
A significant departure from their 2019 EP that had an old-school-blues-centric, the album features nuanced songwriting and clear experimentation that kept me interested, with some harmonies being rather complex with strong dissonances, others more complex rhythmically with cross-phrased guitars, and ‘Long Time Coming’, my personal highlight of the album, featuring synths and sampling to make it a stand-out track texturally.
Together, this exploration keeps each song feeling fresh and distinct from each other, with the album’s composition as a whole doing a lot to keep you engaged.
There is a clear progression in tone and technique here, with the album, as a whole, having quite a fun tone that builds from the slower opening songs into a playful closing track, feeling like a culmination of the ideas built upon throughout the album.
You can listen to ‘The Chase’ now on all major streaming platforms.
