Knowing that the latest EP ‘These Witching Hours’ by singer-songwriter Dale Husband’s solo project Glad Town Ghost was written during a period of deep personal introspection and a crisis of confidence, I’ll admit I expected something solemn. Instead, the opening track, ‘Cleveland Water’, bursts in with buoyancy, led by melodic, twiddling guitar, and sets us up with storytelling that’s subtle yet meticulous in its wordplay.
Slower, more wistful moments creep in with my favourite, ‘La Da Da’, though its ebb soon gives way to the rising jangle-pop finale of ‘Hands of Autumn’. Raw lyrics, peppered with wit, feel human and personal, evoking hope and adding warmth to the overall feel of the EP.
Dale’s vocals exude a folky drollness, reminiscent of Dylan or Conor Oberst, casting off vivid expressiveness. Layered harmonies and a surprise snippet from Cool Hand Luke‘s The Captain’s Speech add intrigue and a touch of whimsy.
In short, ‘These Witching Hours’ is sweet, considered, and the kind of music you just want to curl up on a sofa with – lovely.
