House Proud’s four-track (+intro) EP, ‘Choices’, is a high-voltage demonstration of brute-force post-punk – it’s urgent, abrasive, and totally uncompromising. The band excels at creating chaos that feels both spontaneous and meticulously constructed, producing a wall of sound that’s as thrilling as it is intense.
At its core, the record is driven by a pair of duelling guitars – sharp, angular, and dissonant – spitting out riffs that slice through the mix. Beneath them, the rhythm section powers everything forward. The bass is wonderfully punchy and overdriven, carving out articulate lines that occasionally take on the role of a lead instrument. Meanwhile, the drumming is nothing short of frantic, ensuring the energy never dips as the band hurtles forward at 100mph.
The standout track, ‘Barber’, encapsulates all of House Proud’s strengths: relentless percussion, razor-edged guitar work, and commanding vocals built around a hook that cuts through the noise with raw conviction.
‘Choices’ is essential listening for anyone craving raw, loud, and unapologetically energetic modern post-punk. House Proud do what House Proud do – and nobody does it better.
