Best known as the guitarist in Newcastle jazz collective SwanNek, Jacob Egglestone has recently turned his attention towards a solo project exploring the relationship between music and place. Raised in Cumbria and now based in Newcastle, his instrumental compositions are shaped by the scenery, atmosphere and character of the North’s rural landscapes.
‘Tree and Estuary’ blends jazz and folk influences, combining gentle melodies with understated arrangements to create a reflective, almost cinematic atmosphere. Inspired by the landscapes surrounding the Duddon Estuary near his hometown of Ulverston, the piece captures the unhurried feeling of an afternoon spent beneath the shade of a tree.
Opening with a delicate exchange between guitar and bass before the gradual arrival of drums, the track expands while maintaining its quiet, contemplative nature. Its spacious arrangement allows the sense of place to develop organically.
The result is a beautifully crafted and thoughtfully produced composition that rewards patient listening. ‘Tree and Estuary’ suggests there is plenty more to come as Egglestone continues to develop his distinctive solo voice.
