Older heads and wise youth congregate outside The Cluny on this warm April evening for the Brooklyn legend that is Jeru the Damaja.
Inside nursing a pint, I look up and see a familiar face breathing the scene in, with Jeru just standing there, nobody aware. He breezes through the bodies and within seconds, melts away into the crowd. The next time I see him he’s walking onstage.
With attitude, swagger and jokes (he’s funny as hell), this guy has beats for days, and when you’ve had DJ premier producing some of your finer work, you know that heads will be bouncing.
The room is rammed and up for it, the sound is perfect and Jeru takes the evening by the throat and drags it through one of the best parties The Cluny will have seen this year.
Jeru tears through ‘Come Clean’, ‘Ya Playin’ Yaself’, ‘The Bullshit’ and more, with giant rhymes delivered by the master MC and showman.
Sundays shouldn’t be this good. Take a bow, Jeru.
