To use a footballing analogy, this gig was a game of two halves. Rather than the usual support and main act set-up, the pair shared the stage throughout the evening.
The first half was Rachel’s territory, as the Nashville singer revelled in finally being on tour. Having been unable to head over the pond due to the pandemic, her last attempt had also been thwarted when the plane from New York had to turn back due to a medical emergency.
It was all good in the end and she and Drever settled into a comfortable partnership on stage as they performed her set.
Orkney-born Drever, who is also one-third of folk band, Lau, is warm and laid-back as he works his way through his set with Baiman on guitar, banjo and vocals. Drever’s creativity sees him perform songs borne out of Twitter exchanges (‘Hunker Down’) along with ‘Catterline’, a song written during lockdown at the request of Stonehaven Folk Club.
This is a pair that work extremely well together and I look forward to hearing more of their joint work.
