Listening to ‘The Room’ by Teesside outfit Provenance can only be described as a joy — from its jangly beginnings to its anthemic finale. The follow-up single to ‘Take Back the Mondays’ shifts focus to finding strength and hope through the mental toll of being trapped in isolation, creating an angsty yet buoyant ditty for a new peer group.
At first listen, the track’s indie-pop sensibilities are evident, with inspiration from the likes of The Strokes and Corella peeking through — perhaps thanks, in part, to production by Sugar House. There’s also a whiff of the ’60s at play in the song’s strong, catchy, guitar-led melody.
Drums sweep in with a shush before morphing into a rumbling pound that frolics with skippy bass in a beautiful wave, right up to the crescendo. The vocals are resonant, adding a touch of grit that keeps ‘The Room’ from becoming too saccharine — although sweet it certainly is.
