An exhibition celebrating the work of Salford-born photographer Franki Raffles will be unveiled at BALTIC in Gateshead this month.
Raffles’ work focuses on the lives of women, including in the workplace, and serves to highlight topics of sisterhood, activism, gendered violence, disability and inequality.
Raffles captured women living across the globe, including the UK, the Soviet Union, China, Zimbabwe, the Caribbean, Israel and Palestine. Over the years, she had captured over 40,000 images – a selection of which will be available to view for the first time, along with archive material which puts her work in context for viewers.
Her work has been shown at many notable galleries, including the Mercury Gallery in London and the Stills Gallery in Edinburgh, the latter of which Raffles worked as a freelance photographer where she took pictures of schools and women’s groups.
Raffles tragically died aged 39 during childbirth, but the importance and impact of her work still lives on, decades later.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 11th May.
