Future Arts Centres presents Our Freedom: Then and Now, a powerful photography exhibition at ARC in Stockton, exploring themes of freedom, identity, and belonging through community perspectives.
Bringing together images from 60 locally-driven projects, it offers a contemporary reflection on what freedom means today, capturing a wide range of voices from across the UK. Through these images, visitors are invited to consider how ideas of liberation have evolved over time, shaped by personal stories and shared experiences.
The exhibition, which runs from Wednesday 13th May until Thursday 11th June, forms a nationwide portrait of people and place, highlighting the diversity of voices that contribute to modern Britain. Each project reflects the distinct identity of its community, revealing thoughtful, honest, and sometimes unexpected interpretations of freedom. The result is both intimate and expansive, connecting local narratives to a broader national conversation.
Developed by Future Arts Centres in partnership with Open Eye Gallery, Our Freedom: Then and Now brings together 22 photographers who worked closely with communities of all ages and backgrounds. Participants were encouraged to share their own histories, experiences, and perspectives, resulting in a vibrant and deeply human collection of work that moves beyond traditional photography exhibitions.
By placing community voices at its heart, the exhibition not only commemorates a significant historical milestone but also celebrates the ongoing and personal meaning of freedom in contemporary society.
