Do you like your comedy a little bit filthy, a little bit ridiculous and with a healthy dose of the wonderfully unexpected?
If so, Your Aunt Fanny might just be the comedy troupe you didn’t realise you needed in your life.
The Newcastle-based comedy queens are heading to ARC on Saturday 10 October with their brand-new sketch show, ‘Crease’, and, from the sounds of it, they’ve come up with some properly unhinged ideas for this one.
Your Aunt Fanny have made a name for themselves by taking a very feminine look at the world around them and then, quite sensibly, making it as ridiculous as possible. Everyday situations, social expectations and the odd bit of modern life all get thrown into the mix, with ‘Crease’ promising plenty more of the same.
Among the characters and scenarios audiences can expect are a true-crime-themed hen party, complete with the rather brilliant colour scheme of ‘voyeurism violet’; a men’s club for those who have finally decided they’d quite like to be allies; and a scout leader who is starting to wonder exactly what they’ve signed themselves up for.
And then there’s the filthy step-neighbour involved in a porno bank heist, which is apparently being directed by seven women who have never actually watched porn. I mean, quite where you go after coming up with that idea, I’m not entirely sure, but I suspect Your Aunt Fanny have got plenty more where that came from.
There’s clearly a lot more to ‘Crease’ than simply trying to shock people into laughing, though. The group have a knack for taking things that are instantly recognisable and giving them a thoroughly ridiculous twist, while keeping the writing sharp underneath all the silliness.
That balance is what makes the premise particularly appealing. This isn’t simply comedy for comedy’s sake; it’s a playful look at modern life, relationships, expectations and the wonderfully strange situations we can all find ourselves in.
They’ve been described as “’Smack The Pony’ on steroids”, which feels like a pretty good indication of what you’re getting here. Expect big characters, filthy jokes, slightly bonkers situations and absolutely no shortage of nonsense.
If that sounds like your kind of evening, Your Aunt Fanny: ‘Crease’ could be well worth heading along to. Whether you’re a dedicated comedy fan or simply fancy something a little different, there should be plenty to enjoy.
Just don’t expect to come away with your dignity entirely intact.
