Founded in 2011 by critically acclaimed dancer and choreographer Eliot Smith himself, the Newcastle-based company is known for bringing bold, expressive dance to both stage and street, while making space for the voices and stories of the region. With a mission rooted in accessibility and creativity, the company reaches communities not just through its powerful performances but also through wide-reaching education and outreach work across the UK.
This year’s calendar promises a vibrant mix of homegrown talent and international flair. Returning to the stage is ‘Pitman’, the company’s acclaimed production inspired by the Ashington Group, a collective of miners-turned-painters. A visual and physical homage to their work, the production interprets their art through contemporary movement and original music. The 2025 spring tour brings ‘Pitman’ to venues including The Bowes Museum, Gosforth Civic Theatre, and Trinity Centre in Tunbridge Wells, offering a chance to see a unique fusion of art, history, and dance.
In a more intimate setting, ‘Human/Candlelight’ takes place this June at Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle. For those seeking a more behind-the-scenes look at the world of dance, ‘ESD Presents’ returns in July to Newcastle’s Dance City. A curated showcase of boundary-pushing contemporary dance, this biennial event fosters dialogue between emerging and established choreographers. Audiences can expect a mix of performances, talks, and workshops in a space designed to spark conversation and creativity.
