As part of GemArts’ Masala Festival celebrations, Dance City presents Bulleh Shah: Seeker of Light on Monday 13th July, marking ten years of the festival championing South Asian arts and culture in the North East.
At the heart of the production is Kathak artist Gaurav Bhatti, who performs and choreographs this compelling solo work inspired by the poetry of the 18th-century Punjabi Sufi mystic Bulleh Shah. A figure whose influence continues to resonate today, Bulleh Shah’s writing challenged authority and orthodoxy, instead exploring themes of love, self-discovery and spiritual resistance.
Rather than simply illustrating the poetry, Bhatti inhabits its ideas through movement. Precise footwork, rhythmic control and expressive gestures are combined with elements of Punjabi folk dance and contemporary physical theatre. At times, the performance feels tightly controlled and percussive; at others, it becomes more fluid and reflective. This contrast is mirrored in the soundscape, which blends North Indian classical music with subtle electronic textures to create a rich and immersive atmosphere.
Rather than placing Bulleh Shah firmly in the past, the work presents his words as living and relevant. Questions of identity, belonging and faith remain unresolved, carried through movement and expression rather than explicit answers.
Presented by Dance City and GemArts, the performance forms part of a wider festival programme celebrating the diversity and creativity of South Asian culture. Intimate, thought-provoking and beautifully crafted, Bulleh Shah: Seeker of Light offers audiences a powerful experience that lingers long after the final movement.
