North East alt rockers, Decrepit Youths, draw in influences from Royal Blood, Foos, and Don Broco. As they release their debut EP, Lee Allcock caught up with the band to discuss drug use, BBC Introducing, and more.
What can fans expect from your highly anticipated debut EP, ‘Love Psycho Kill Machine’?
Three tracks of equal intensity, pace, and energy, but each unique in its own way. We hope we’ve created something special for our listeners by combining a variety of genres and offering them something they haven’t heard before.
How would you describe your unique sound? And how have your influences from artists like Bring Me The Horizon, Don Broco, and even film composers like Hans Zimmer shaped your music?
Our sound is a blend of rock and metal mixed with electronic and orchestral elements. ‘Black Dove’ has a drum and bass section at the end and it’s extremely fun to play live as it’s high-octane energy from the word go. We like to draw influence from a variety of artists so that our music stays fresh and we don’t get stuck down a rabbit hole when writing new songs.
Can you tell us about the lyrical themes of the EP and how it addresses the darker realities of drug use and abuse?
The lyrics always stem from darker topics as we don’t want to just write about “love” or “relationships”. It’s important to address things that resonate with you, as it comes from the heart, and you can hear that in the end result. ‘Love Psycho’ talks about drug abuse and how it can overcome you. We actually sampled the 1980s “War on Drugs” speech from Nancy Reagan and we thought that was a really cool addition to the track.
After the success of your debut single, ‘Loose Ends’, and follow-up ‘Kill the Lights’, how has the support from BBC Introducing and BBC Radio One shaped the band’s journey so far?
Shakk and Alyx, and the entire team at BBC Introducing, have been incredible for our journey so far. To be supported by local and national DJs is amazing as it gives something back for all the hard work you put in. We were interviewed by Shakk on his Introducing show a few months ago and it was so much fun. It shines a spotlight on us and our music, helping to push it out to a more mainstream audience, so the support is crucial.
As a dual-fronted band with high-energy performances, what has it been like to see your music resonate with listeners and earn attention from tastemakers like Alyx Holcombe?
Having support from Alyx Holcombe has been incredible and she seems to really dig our music…she even shouted us out on her last show. Getting recognition like that in the early stages of a project is amazing as it fuels us further to keep going and shows we’re making killer songs.
With ‘Love Psycho Kill Machine’ set to drop, what’s next for the band in 2025? And how do you see the band evolving over the next few months?
We have a few festival bookings lined up and we’re looking to put on our first headline show this year, which is super exciting. We also have four new killer songs recorded, all of which will be released this year!
You can listen to ‘Love Psycho Kill Machine’ now on all major streaming platforms.
