Northern outfit No Time For Reason have had a refresh and will be kicking things back off with new single, ‘Critical’, (out June 4th). Georgina Shine caught up with the band to find out what we can expect.
How would you describe yourselves?
We’re four northern lads – a motley crew from completely different musical backgrounds. We’re a pop/rock band who make hard-hitting, catchy rock songs full of riffs and hooks. Our influences come from bands such as Royal Blood, Biffy Clyro and Twin Atlantic, with touches of classic punk and noughties pop-punk. Musically, we’ve really started to branch out and develop our sound, introducing instruments outside of the usual norms.
Tell me about your new single, ‘Critical’…
The bones to ‘Critical’ were written over two years ago – it was one of the first songs we started to develop as a band. It was written during a difficult time for Stoker, who channelled his frustration and pain into an aggressive piece of music threaded with a layer of anxiety. We ended up sitting on the song for ages wanting to push it to be where we thought it could go. Through developing the song, we decided to arrange in strings and collaborate with “String Infusion” (a Manchester-based string troop). We felt this brought the impact of the song to the level it deserved. We’re really happy with how the mix has turned out.
Who or what inspires you musically?
The songwriting comes initially from the lead singer (Stoker). Once the track is started, we develop the song as a four-piece, adding our own ideas and influences. Our mixing pot of musicality blends the music we grew up with into something modern and relevant; everything from early romantic era classical composition to modern aggressive rock with EDM influences. We want people to remember our tunes and sing them back to us.
What impact has the pandemic had on your music?
As full-time musicians, it’s been really tough mentally to get through the last year. Music is our passion and our outlet so it’s been hard to keep motivated – but we are coming back with a strong track that we are all proud of.
What does the future hold for you?
Ultimately, we just want to get back into the studio and back on stage performing to crowds, playing the music we’re so proud of and love.
