There has been a lot of press regarding equality in film, television and music of late and what better way is there to showcase the prestigious talents of our female musicians here in the North East than with an entire event dedicated to their craft.
Women Are Mint is a celebration of female musical ability that takes place over three days at Cobalt Studios in the Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle – and what a showcase it’s set to be.
The first night is a great opportunity to catch the quite fabulous Me Lost Me who will be demonstrating why so many music fans are talking about her. This atmospheric and folky performer has been described as: “a truly exceptional up-and-coming artist”.
Needing no introduction for readers of NE Volume, I’m sure, are North East electronic anthemic champions Twist Helix who have recently toured singer and keyboard player Bea’s home country of Spain and always put on a great show and bring in a great crowd. Friday also sees local singer-songwriter Becca James, DJ Awkward Black Girl and Portraits take to the stage.
Saturday brings more music in the form of The Cornshed Sisters whose second album, ‘Honey and Tar’, was recorded and produced by local legend Peter Brewis of Field Music. The band has always put their experiences as women at the heart of their music and are an excellent addition to this feminine festival of sounds.
Ladies of Midnight Blue are also an outfit not to miss. Fusing dreamlike sounds with traditional African instruments and vocals, this band works hard on projects designed to give access to women in music.
Saturday night also gives a great opportunity to catch composer, performer and DJ, Mariam Rezaei. Her creative and innovative use of turntables, piano and electronics create a great soundscape and her performances are often improvised and unique. Completing the Saturday line-up are Cadi, Picnic and Jolly Abacus.
Whilst the Friday and Saturday are strictly 18+ evening events, the Sunday aims to open up the venue for families during the day and into the evening.
With music from Laurie Shepherd, Holy Moly & The Crackers’ Ruth Patterson, Ceitidh Mac and Lady Annabella, alongside workshops and food stalls, there will be something for all ages to enjoy.
Women Are Mint runs from Friday 10th May until Sunday 12th May.
