Middlesbrough Gigs Association continues its programme of live music at the impressive Town Hall Courtroom with a special performance from British singer-songwriter Our Man In The Field.
Our Man In The Field is the musical project of Alex Ellis, born from a life-changing moment. In 2014, Ellis was admitted to hospital with severe abdominal pain, where doctors discovered a tumour similar to one that had previously taken his father’s life. The experience prompted him to reflect deeply on his own path and ultimately inspired him to make significant changes.
At the time, Ellis had been working primarily as an actor. Soon afterwards, however, he began focusing on songwriting, gradually developing a distinctive musical voice and identity. He has described Our Man In The Field as almost a persona – a storyteller and observer of the world, inspired by literary figures such as Jack Kerouac, Albert Camus, and the roaming reportage of Hunter S. Thompson (albeit with fewer excesses). His music blends indie-folk and Americana influences with cinematic, observational songwriting, often drawing comparisons to artists like Van Morrison, Neil Young and Ray LaMontagne.
Joining him as special guests are Before Close, a new collaborative venture from local songwriters Jodie Nicholson and Joe Ramsey. Their project promises a blend of music and visuals that captures a strong sense of place and nostalgia.

We care deeply about both live music and Middlesbrough, and we’re committed to bringing high-quality events to our town.”
Now in its second year, Middlesbrough Gigs Association is supported by public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. The beautifully restored Courtroom – famous for its striking stained-glass ceiling – serves as the project’s flagship venue. This event will be presented as a relaxed Sunday Social late-afternoon show.
