There’s something perfectly fitting about Pale Waves arriving in Sunderland on a summer evening. A band built on heart-on-sleeve emotion, self-reflection and shimmering indie-pop melodies, their music feels tailor-made for an outdoor setting beneath warm skies and a setting sun.
The Manchester-born four-piece, fronted by the charismatic Heather Baron-Gracie alongside Ciara Doran, Hugo Silvani and Charlie Wood, have spent the best part of a decade evolving from gothic-tinged indie darlings into one of the UK’s most distinctive alternative acts. Since emerging with early singles such as ‘There’s a Honey’ and ‘Television Romance’, Pale Waves have carved out a unique space within modern British guitar music, blending infectious pop hooks with candid lyricism and an unmistakable visual identity.
Their journey through four studio albums has been marked by growth, reinvention and a commitment to remaining true to themselves. Their most recent record, ‘Smitten’, released in September 2024, feels like the band’s most confident and assured statement to date.
Where 2022’s ‘Unwanted’ embraced a punchier pop-punk sound, ‘Smitten’ sees the band revisit elements of the jangly guitars and synth-pop textures that first won them widespread acclaim. Drawing inspiration from teenage diary entries and memories of early queer romance, Heather Baron-Gracie described the album as “delicate and feminine”, resulting in a collection of songs that feels deeply personal while remaining instantly relatable.
The album was met with widespread praise, earning a four-star review from NME, which described it as “loved-up liberation” and suggested listeners would find themselves “falling for Pale Waves all over again”. It’s a fitting assessment of a record that showcases the band’s ability to balance vulnerability with confidence while continuing to refine their sound.
The Sunderland date forms part of The Fire Station’s eagerly anticipated Summer Parties series, taking place outdoors on the venue’s Parade Ground. With its relaxed, communal atmosphere and open-air setting, it’s the perfect environment for Pale Waves’ uplifting and emotionally charged live show, as well as a strong supporting line-up.
This is far from the first time the band have shown Sunderland some love. Their 2025 ‘Still Smitten’ tour deliberately targeted cities that, in Heather’s words, “often get overlooked”. Sunderland proudly featured on that list, with the band describing such locations as “places that deserve more love; those underrated spots that are full of character and loyal fans we’ve been aching to play for”.
So head to the Parade Ground on Saturday 1st August and experience one of Britain’s finest modern indie bands in what promises to be a stunning summer evening.
Tickets, priced at £29.00 in advance, are available at thefirestation.org.uk.
