Since 1984, The Men They Couldn’t Hang (TMTCH, to their legions of fans) have been on a wild ride, and they’ll be celebrating 40 years of their unique and considered sound at The Georgian Theatre as part of their anniversary tour.
Known for their sharp social commentary, brilliantly twisted with dark historical and political stories, TMTCH make a lot of noise – but thoughtfully so. They’ve always had something to say. Whether through fiery ballads, knee-slapping shanties, or fiddle-led electric cowpunk, their voice is poetic and laced with a folk edge.
Originally emerging from London’s squatting and busking scene, the band first gained attention in the late ‘80s, appearing at Camden’s Electric Ballroom supporting Pougemahone (who later became The Pogues). The heady days of the ‘80s saw TMTCH release four studio albums on four separate labels, including their debut ‘Night of a Thousand Candles’ on Demon, and ‘Silver Town’ in 1989 with Silvertone. The band followed up with both a studio and live album in the early ‘90s before taking a hiatus in 1991.
After reuniting in 1996, and with several solo releases between tours, TMTCH have continued to perform worldwide, including in Europe, the USA, and even Egypt. With over ten albums and 16 singles to their name, their catalogue is extensive. Their festival appearances – including Glastonbury, Reading, and Cambridge Folk – have helped them amass a loyal fanbase across generations, further cementing their place in music history.
Tragedy struck in 2021 when co-frontman and founding member Stefan Cush tragically passed away from a heart attack. The band was devastated, but as they’ve always done, they responded by writing, recording, and performing music. The Magnificent 40 Tour is not only a celebration of their friend’s legacy but also a tribute to their fans and a testament to what 40 years of blood, sweat, and tears looks like.
Having performed alongside legends like David Bowie, The Smiths, and Bo Diddley, TMTCH’s live shows are known for their raw energy, passion, and unpredictability. With just the right amount of chaos, their performances continue to showcase the musical talents that have never wavered throughout their extraordinary career.
