The Thanes are a renowned garage, rock, beat and psychedelic band that started their journey in the mid-1980s from their home in Edinburgh. Although initially formed in 1980 under the name of Green Telescope, the band has seen numerous personal changes over its lifespan but has always been led by lead singer and guitarist, Lenny Helsing.
Their first album, ‘The Thane of Cawdor’, was released in 1987 and featured the unique sound and unmistakable influences of jangling ‘60s garage-rock; their album helped them gain recognition but also support slots with the likes of Primal Scream.
The band’s most recent record is ‘Les Thanes’, released May 2023 on the Disques Rogue label from France. The release features two exciting new originals in ‘For What Reward’ and ‘Heed The Warning’ plus two cover versions from the Pretty Things and the Twilights. This four-song EP brings you fuzzy guitars, screaming organ and all the glorious sixties punk noises.
The band have released 23 singles and 8 albums over an astonishing 36-year period and have still stayed true to their ‘60s garage-rock sound, with the most present band members being organist Angus McPake and leader / vocalist / lead guitarist, Lenny Helsing. The band also joined the Scottish outfit The Poets between 2010-2012 and toured the country. In 2013, bassist Tag Hunter and Drummer Mike Goodwin joined the line-up.
This is a band who have had years of experience crafting their sound and know how to put on a show. Their incredible sound gives them a unique style that has been forgotten in mainstream modern music but has inspired so many. The Thanes simply stay true to the heritage that inspired them.
