A folk duo originally from Nova Scotia, Canada, but now residing in Consett, Mills & Farrell are certainly a breath of fresh air, immediately evoking feelings of Simon & Garfunkel through their natural chemistry and talent.
‘See The Stars’, the opening track of their new album, ‘Crooked Path’, takes me right back to the first time I heard ‘Homeward Bound’. There is undeniable skill in finding two vocalists who complement each other with such timing and passion – something you simply cannot fabricate.
The album itself plays out like a diary, following the duo’s relocation from Canada to Consett, while also serving as a wider metaphor for the path many people (this reviewer included) might find themselves travelling. ‘
The Drink’ and ‘Rainy Season’ are inspired by real-life events, presented here for your consideration in a distinctly acoustic Americana style. Somehow, it feels better hearing “it’s raining again in County Durham” when it’s sung in harmony.
‘Maggie’ and ‘Lifeboat’ also stand out as highlights on an album filled with purpose and quiet power.
You can listen to the album now on all major streaming platforms.
