If you like country & bluegrass you’re going to die over Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, another incredible act brought to the region by Jumpin’ Hot Club as part of the Middlesbrough Town Hall Courtroom Sessions.
The four work almost as one euphonious lyrical creature; every song starts seamlessly as if it’s a carefully-tracked recording except it isn’t – it’s live.
I’m convinced that this group have some high tech internal music Ethernet connecting them: their timing, harmonies, entry and movements are impeccable.
Fronted by Seth Mulder on the mandolin, the band are charismatic, highly-trained musicians, each one a music college graduate – and it shows.
They’re traditional bluegrass updated as underneath that riding banjo and double bass you can hear each group member bringing their own slightly updated style of rock ‘n’ roll.
On an icy, drab Middlesbrough evening, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run lift the audience right into a hot summer’s night at a barn dance somewhere in Tennessee.
