In a world often divided by borders, flags, and occupied lands, the quest for freedom remains as urgent and resonant as ever. Free, an immersive and compelling new performance, invites audiences on a powerful journey toward a place without limitations – a space where people can live freely and express their true selves without restraint.
This groundbreaking show uniquely fuses the infectious rhythms of Reggae Dub culture with the dynamic movement of contemporary dance, creating a vibrant celebration of liberation, resilience, and joy – even in the darkest of times. As the performers passionately sing: “Take me to a place where I am free, leave the people dem so they can see,” the message becomes clear: freedom is not a mere dream or distant ideal, but a vital necessity for all.
Free channels the rich legacy of Reggae’s global influence since the 1960s – a powerful musical movement that has inspired revolutions and empowered oppressed communities around the world. The performance draws deeply from the spiritual and cultural roots of Nyabinghi rhythms, allowing audiences to physically feel the pulse of the one drop beat reverberating through their bodies. This intoxicating blend of sound and movement encourages everyone to gather, skank, and “lively up yourself” until the collective spirit is uplifted and truly free.
At the heart of Free is the original music written and performed by Buck and The Magnificence. Their Reggae Dub style forms the heartbeat of the show, providing a live, immersive soundscape that anchors Toussaint To Move’s evocative storytelling through contemporary dance. Together, these artists craft a narrative that explores both personal liberation and community resilience, inspiring hope and connection across audiences.
Free is co-commissioned by prestigious organisations including Sadler’s Wells, Transform Festival, and ARC Stockton. Its development has been supported by The Make New Work Programme and funded through Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants, highlighting the significance of this work within the contemporary arts landscape.
More than just entertainment, Free promises to inspire and empower – reminding all who experience it that freedom is an ongoing pursuit, one to be celebrated through music, movement, and collective joy.
For those eager to embark on this immersive journey, Free will be showcased at ARC Stockton on Friday 5th September. Everyone is invited to join in the rhythm, the dance, and the unwavering quest for true freedom.
