Don’t you just love a bird that introduces itself by saying its own name? Peewits, Chiffchaffs, Cuckoos – and, of course, the Kittiwake.
Kittiwakes are a familiar sight and sound among the buildings along the Quayside of Newcastle and Gateshead from late February to late August. This particular gathering happens to be the most inland breeding colony in the entire world. Their remarkable nesting behaviour can be observed from the viewing platform of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The Kittiwakes’ surprising abundance in this urban environment is due to the many bridges and tall buildings that provide ideal nesting sites, and to the much-improved water quality of the once heavily polluted River Tyne, which now offers a plentiful food source.

This fun, festive and family-friendly show is sure to inform, inspire, and spark the imagination of audiences of all ages.
The whimsically educational production will be hosted by two Kittiwakes (yes, really) who will whisk audiences away on a magical migratory journey around the globe, starting right here in Newcastle. Along the way, there will be encounters with other fascinating feathered friends. The imaginative ideas of local schoolchildren are woven into the performance, reflecting Live Theatre’s ethos of “developing the creative voices of young people.”
