Hartlepool indie-punk outfit Northern Hospitality are back with their new single, ‘Six Feet Underside’. Heidi Wood caught up with frontman Gaz Price to discuss supporting Kaiser Chiefs, playing gigs outside of the North East, and more.
You were originally a solo artist, but how did you come about choosing Northern Hospitality as the name for your band?
Northern Hospitality is something I came up with a long time ago during my solo career days. I named my first-ever EP that, and it has just stuck with me since then. It represents who we are and brings our edge to the backdrop, the same way our sound brings it to the airwaves.
Does making music within a band come naturally to you all?
Yeah. I would say when you’re a tight unit like we are, things come together organically. Whenever we’re creating and writing, the best songs just come together. We rehearse relentlessly, which means no matter when the opportunity arises, we can unload both barrels at the drop of a hat.
What is the most fulfilling part about your career?
The two biggest things for me have always been getting the recordings back for the first time. Nothing really touches that first listen to your creation. The next is always the away days – travelling across the country with your best friends and playing your own brand of crafted chaos to people. It’s a beautiful thing, man.
How would you describe your sound?
A chaotic creation of punk-influenced themes infused with catchy melodies and heavy guitars.
What influenced you to make the type of music you do?
Growing up listening to bands that shaped your life views, your clothes, your mood… I knew what kind of band I wanted to be in, and we’ve grafted like mad to get where we want to be. Bands like Nirvana, Green Day, Linkin Park, and The Clash have always been the constant in our lives.
What’s been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
We supported Kaiser Chiefs and Feeder on the main stage this year at a festival in Hartlepool, in front of 6000 home fans. That was mental and really set us up to take the next step in our career.
Your new single is out on Friday 6th December. Tell me a bit about the process of making that…
This is very much our heaviest tune to date. I write everything acoustically and then bring it to practice. Our lead guitarist, Sean, had the chorus riff that fitted perfectly with my verse and intro. Everything came together, and our bassist Nico and drummer Georgia added the dynamics to make it fly.
What should we be looking forward to in regards to future plans?
We have our biggest gig outside of the North East next year in London, which may coincide with new music coming out. We’ve been to Merseyside to record next year’s first single, and it’s without a doubt the biggest thing we’ve done. You can expect to see us in every big city that will have us. 2025 will be our biggest year yet.
You can listen to Northern Hospitality’s new single from Friday 6th December on all major streaming platforms.
