Beloved underground venue Base Camp, in the beating heart of Middlesbrough, will spring back into full action in June, promising to gather momentum throughout the month with a slate of gigs showing serious intent to showcase some DIY shenanigans.
Gigs will remain socially distanced in line with government regulations until, all being well, the final Friday of the month marks a big bang with the return of non-restricted events.
Base Camp will make full use of the unique month and the building excitement, launching a new Friday night from 4th June which will move forward as a monthly spotlight on stripped-back and scaled-down performance.
That night will welcome Durham singer-songwriter Phibi alongside Scrannabis, with all nights featuring double bills. Phibi has been busy finding her musical identity in 2020 and brings a riotous range of influences from across metal, hip-hop and RnB. Scrannabis channels his own bedroom vibes through a prism of woozy hip-hop and is noted for his autodidactic, diary-esque lyricism.
June 11th will see the arrival of Leeds-based artist Epilogues and local hero, Dressed Like Wolves. The night is likely to be coloured with intimate, sombre vibes from two artists defined by the influence of space and architecture of all shapes on their music, from attics to empty flats. Epilogues continues to edge North on his journey and will bring his movingly observed acoustics to town off the back of new EP, ‘You’, while DLW recently contributed the spindly lo-fi of ‘Big Pool’ as a tribute to Middlesbrough’s Westgarth Social Club.
‘Big Pool’ was a split with local collective Nel Unlit, who will touch down at Base Camp one week later on June 18th. ‘Six Nights’ was Nel Unlit’s half of the recent release, and the acclaimed gang are busy formulating their follow-up to the impactful conceptual debut album ‘Wake For The Dreaming’. Audiences are assured of an accomplished and intricate set here alongside Bloody Death, solo lo-fi rock with guitar and keyboard textures hugely in tune with the aesthetics of these Base Camp nights.
Finally, June 25th marks the big one, with “Hartlepool’s soundest band” Marketplace having the privilege of gracing the stage as headliners for this celebratory free entry gig! The upcoming indie-pop outfit will be accompanied by Newcastle art-rockers Cat Ryan for this thrilling climax to the month as local live music returns in style!
