The newly-refurbished back room of Base Camp hosted a sizable crowd tonight for a gig boasting three of the finest local indie-rock/punk acts.
Sorry Escalator set the tone for the evening with a superb opening set. Drifting between the low-key melancholy of US indie-rock bands Pavement and Sebadoh, and sharp outbursts of noise-rock straight out of the Thurston Moore playbook, Sorry Escalator encapsulate a classic loser rock sound and play it like total heroes.
Next up followed a unique set from Pellethead, by even their standards, who typically soldiered on through the adversity of a broken drum skin, resulting in an improvised set of deeper cuts receiving a rare outing.
James Leonard Hewitson’s headlining set recalled the power-pop fuzz of Matador Records’ legendary rocker Jay Reatard, with a smoother, poppier edge. His impressive backing band provided a solid foundation, enabling James to blast through crowd-pleasing favourites to cap off an excellent evening.
