Teesside audiences have a lot to look forward to this month as comedian, actor and writer Phil Wang takes to the stage at the Ripping Yarms Comedy Club at Princess Alexandra Auditorium in Yarm on Sunday 15th September with his wonderful style of multicultural comedy.
A UK-born comedian whose parents moved to Malaysia when he was the grand age of one week old, luckily for us, Phil moved back to the UK where he studied at King’s College in Cambridge.
Having won the Chortle Student Comedian of the Year Award in 2010, the accolades kept coming, and he went on to win Comedy Central’s Funniest Student Award in 2011.
Phil has performed all over the world, including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, with this effortlessly quick and cool wit ensuring the jokes always come thick and fast.
In addition to his comedic talents, Phil is a regular on TV and has appeared on The Rob Brydon Show, Taskmaster, Room 101, Have I Got News For You, and 8 Out Of Ten Cats Does Countdown, to name just a few of the many shows you will likely recognise him from.
In May 2021, ‘Phil Wang Hates Horror’ was released on Audible as a podcast, and in August 2021, he released a Netflix comedy special, shortly followed in September 2021 with his first book, ‘Sidesplitter: How To Be From Two Worlds At Once’. It’s safe to say Phil is not a man who sits back and waits for things to happen. If you haven’t seen it already, check out Phil’s triumphant opening monologue as he hosted the Bafta Games Awards 2024.
Ripping Yarms Comedy Club is described as “where comedy legends and rising stars collide for an unforgettable night of laughter” – and they’re not wrong there! As well as the top-notch headlining act of Phil Wang, there is also a plethora of huge entertainment throughout the evening in the form of host, MC Hayley Ellis, who will be kicking off the show with her signature style of witty comedy, followed by multi-award winning Michael Akadiri and outstanding satirist, Rosie Holt. That’s a whole lot of award winning gold-star comedy in one night.
With such an incredible line-up for the evening, you would be mad to miss it.
Tickets, priced at £25.00 in advance, are available from thepaaonline.org.
