The Riverside Rebellion events are a superb showcase of legendary punk bands and give gig-goers the opportunity to check out some classic bands from the golden age of punk alongside relative new-comers continuing the glory of punk music.
This year’s event sees a headline act who were there right at the beginning, the true spirit of the legendary punk summer of ’77, 999. The outfit have released 12 studio albums since their formation and their single ‘Emergency’ was listed by Mojo as “one of the best punk singles of all time”. Over the years, from regular gigs at the legendary Hope and Anchor pub in Islington to performances around the world including a 1991 Los Angeles gig that spawned a well-received live album, 999 have maintained their status as one of the first influential and angriest of punk acts.
Joining the line-up is Duncan Reid whose former band The Boys were described as “The Beatles of Punk” due to their harmonies and pop-based melodies fused with raw punk sound. Joey Ramone once described the band as one of his favourites.
Also playing are The Bermondsey Joyriders. Claiming all the credentials of a bonafide ’77 super group, they are a band that are pooling the hard-won experience and history of three veteran punks. More than just the sum of their impressive punk-rock heritage, however, The Bermondsey Joyriders have won praise for splicing their sounds from the suburbs with raw blues and Lammin’s startling slide guitar.
Delivering a more modern take on the punk sound, Leeds based outfit Klammer will be demonstrating why their melodic and brooding post-punk sound has gained them support to Penetration at the iconic 100 Club in London, radio play from Steve Lamacq and a support tour with Richie Ramone.
Also hailing from Leeds with influences of psychobilly, punk, rockabilly and rock ‘n’ roll, The X Ray Cat Trio have made a name for themselves performing throughout the North of England and make a great addition to the bill at the Westgarth.
This is a spectacular line-up and a real celebration of all things punk, with additional performances by Johnny Seven, The Relitics and The Filth.
The downstairs fringe event, named the Undercurrent Stage’, will include the likes of The Shakin’ Nightmares, Wax Phantoms, Continental Quilts, The Likkor Men, 4 Mile Drive and Numbskull Action.
Riverside Rebellion #5 takes place at the Westgarth Social Club on Saturday 7th December, kicking off at 14:00.
