Treeboy & Arc formed in Leeds in 2016, entering the scene gigging at their own self-promoted events before gravitating to the local indie venue circuit and quickly generating a cult following in Yorkshire.
It seems befitting that a DIY band, born out of Leeds’ house party scene, moved in together in 2018, converting the basement of a tiny red-brick terrace in LS6 into a small, (slightly) damp rehearsal space complete with ad-hoc egg box soundproofing and bits of old Axminster for added authenticity.
It’s perhaps not as easy as you might think to define Treeboy & Arc’s sound. To describe them as post-punk feels a little obvious, and not entirely accurate. At face value, in the current climate, their ’80s punk influences do seem to swim to the surface in their writing. But delve deeper into the outpourings of this pacy five-piece to discover inspo reference points fast evolving to Kraut-Rock, Avant-Garde Electronic & Pop music.
Treeboy & Arc have found their niche – creating pop songs that integrate relentless repetitive rhythms and left-field, almost robotic sounding synthesisers – with a Kraut-Rock inspired rhythm section, melodic guitars and noisy abrasive synths thrown in.
