Since his debut release in 2018, entitled ‘All Night’, Michael has gained a notable following for both his releases and live performances – and from the opening seconds of his latest single, ‘Yesterday’, it’s easy to see why.
Much like the song’s lyrics, it doesn’t mess about: it gets in, punches you in the face and gets out. There are no unnecessary sections, no time for the mind to wander, and it’s unapologetically indie: it’s catchy, feel-good and full of hooks.
There are clearly elements of early noughties influences (think The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys), with the latter characterised by clever and intricate pauses formed by the beat-perfect drum, bass and rhythm guitar segments that give the track its post-punk feel.
There is a confidence and assuredness about Gallagher’s vocals too, with just a hint of reminder around the 46-second mark of the control he has over his voice.
This is another excellent track that will undoubtedly gain Michael a lot of admirers amongst the indie/post-punk scene.
