A show inspired by the Chinese poet Yu Xiuhua has been made by Feng Ling Productions – a company that was born out of a curiosity of Asian artists, stories and perspectives.
The hour-long dance performance is set to depict the tellings of Xiuhua’s poetry and put a spotlight on the themes of love, beauty, disability, and the societal expectations placed on women.
Having Cerebral Palsy herself, Xiuhua has experienced these personal struggles as she has tried to find her authentic self.
The director of the show, Farooq Chaudhry, was inspired by her work and has set out to combine it with dance and visual design, to bring Xiuhua’s words to life in a new, moving way.
By using the shorthand of visual choreography, the influential words will reach a whole new audience.
Could these poems hold the key to finding a reality where we embrace our shadows, and our souls find freedom?
