On Thursday 9th and Friday 10th November, Northern Stage in Newcastle presents ‘Driftwood’, a new play by Tim Foley. The play is co-presented by Thickskin and Pentabus theatre stables, with co-direction from their respective members Neil Bettles and Elle While.
Rooted in a decidedly local focus with a setting of Seaton Carew, an internationally recognised location for undoubtedly curious reasons already tied to contemporary folklore, the play’s blurb states that “These are the shores of Vikings, Victorians, van drivers and visions. The tide is out but the chips are hot”, a deliciously pitched evocation of the production’s seaside façade, which also touches upon the play’s themes of hope in the face of degradation, belonging and identity, and a distinct air of mysticism often associated with the British seafront.
As a key cog in Newcastle and the wider area’s buoyant and oft-underrated theatre scene, Northern Stage is renowned for its community role, its representation and its creativity. In its thematics, locality, scale and style, ‘Driftwood’ stands as another exemplar of this mission statement.
