Mycelial is a play that aims to challenge the stigmatisation and misconceptions surrounding sex work.
According to Amnesty (Human Rights Organization, 2022), there are over 73,000 sex workers in the UK, with more than 70% working in healthcare, education, and even voluntary sectors.
Mycelial is a unique and thought-provoking production that combines activism and theatre on the Northern stage.
The play was written by Catrina McHugh MBE, directed by Laura Lindow, and co-created with sex worker activists.
McHugh organised workshops for sex workers in the North East of England and recognized that the voices of sex workers were often absent from the narrative.
McHugh stated: “People are afraid to discuss it. Mycelial aims to create a space for debate and discussion. It is a powerful blend of activism and theatre that celebrates the strength and humanity of sex work activists who cannot ignore injustice.”
This play was made possible through collaborations with the multi-award-winning theatre company, Open Clasp, who aim to change the world one play at a time by collaborating with women excluded by theatre and society to create bold and urgent theatre for personal, social and political change.
